When you make any decision that you hope will change your life, you may find yourself having to change certain aspects of your life.
It could be that you’ve decided to lose weight in the New Year. To achieve that goal, you would get the advice from a nutritionist to help you in monitoring your calorie intake. Or the assistance of a personal trainer who will help you maintain a long-term exercise program.
The same theory applies when you decide that you want to be successful… Financially!
You simply have to surround yourself with the right people who you can learn from and who will support you on your journey to success.
Tim Guest’s dad once gave him some advice that ultimately got him to where he is today. That advice was “only listen to people who are where you want to be!” Makes sense doesn’t it?
But to quote someone a little more infamous than our very own TG, Benjamin Franklin, an American founding father summed it up perfectly in this quote, “if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.”
The right people will have particular qualities that will act as a positive influence as you make your mark in the world.
Here are four individual qualities that will help you decide if you are surrounding yourself with the right people in your life:
1) Treat Everyone Well
We’ve all heard the famous saying, “treat others how you would like to be treated.” So are the people that you’re hanging around treating other people with love, gratitude, respect, and encouragement?
William Rawlins, the Stocker Professor of Interpersonal Communication at Ohio University says that the three expectations of a close friend or acquaintance are “somebody to talk to, someone to rely on, and someone to enjoy.”
Rawlins further states that the definition of these values often changes with time.
“These expectations remain the same, but the circumstances under which they’re accomplished change.”
Caroline Pettet, owner of Geraldton business Roma, says that surrounding yourself with people who treat you well is important because it influences her business’ success.
“If you are going to succeed in life, you have to surround yourself with people who are respectful and appreciative,” Mrs. Pettet says.
“If you’re friends with someone who you is going to bad mouth you and your business and spread bad vibes about it, then obviously they are not a positive influence on the success of your business.”
Ask yourself the question, are your friends treating other people with love, care and respect like you would expect?
2) Have a sense of humour
Sydney psychologist Susan Nicholson says that having a sense of humour is a positive trait to have as a human.
“It’s a fantastic coping mechanism and reinforcing cycle, because the more you can see the funny side and laugh, the greater the sense of happiness it instills,” Ms. Nicholson says.
“It allows you to see the positive side in things.”
3) Be Interesting
According to Forbes Magazine, being around people who are living life and making the most of it encourages you to do the same.
Mrs. Pettet echoes these thoughts.
“Over the course of owning my two businesses (a café and a gift shop), I have learned that I have to surround myself with people who have the same interests as myself,” she says.
“People who are interesting often have stories that come along with them. These stories influence me to strive that little bit further in running my businesses on a day to day basis.”
Learn how to filter out those who are not beneficial to your life and choose people who make your life just that little bit more exciting.
4) Celebrate other people’s success
According to research by Sarah Hill and David Buss titled “The Evolutionary Psychology of Envy,” we experience envy “because it enables us to evaluate our position in the competition for resources.
“Social comparison is the way we determine where we stand and how to adjust.”
If you’re finding that your or your friends/colleagues/mentors fall into this category, it’s probably best to consider moving away from them.
Surround yourself with people who cheer you on and get excited about achieving your goals and dreams.
As hard as it may be to move away from those that make up the inner sanctum of your life, you need to allow yourself the chance to achieve your goals and dreams.
Surround yourself with people who act the way that makes you smile and who are achieving things that you want to achieve. We promise it will make a profound difference to your ultimate destiny.
